Executive summary

I started working at UOIT in Fall 2006 as a sessional instructor.  In my first term, I taught one section of HLSC1200 and all seven tutorial sections associated with it.  My responsibilities quickly grew so that I taught two courses in Winter 2007, became the lead instructor for HLSC1200 and HLSC1201 in the 2007-2008 academic year, was teaching a fourth course (NURS2810) in Fall 2008 and developed my first completely online course (NURS2820) to teach in Winter 2009.

During these first few years, I enjoyed teaching in a university setting and was constantly looking for ways to develop and expand my teaching skills and knowledge.  I took advantage of professional development opportunities offered at UOIT, and participated Teaching Squares, Brown bag lunch talks and workshops organized by the Teaching and Learning Center (and its predecessors).  As part of this, I volunteered to pilot the use of interactive clickers in the large classroom setting, a tool that I still utilize in my classes.

By the end of 2008, I had ran out of workshops and internal professional development initiatives and decided to enrol in a Master of Education (MEd) program.  The benefits arising from this program were numerous, including exposure to a variety of learning and teaching strategies, expanding on pedagogical knowledge and developing a plan to apply these knowledge and strategies to my own teaching practises.  My experiences as a student in a fully online program led to further improvements in my own teaching, which was invaluable as I was designing and teaching completely online courses in my role as a sessional instructor.

In August 2010, I was offered a three year Limited Term Appointment as a Lecturer.  I designed and taught completely online courses (HLSC3910, HLSC4996, HLSC4997, EDUC4701) for the Bachelor of Allied Health Sciences (BAHSc) program.  I was involved with curriculum development and program revision within the BAHSc and the BHSc (Bachelor of Health Sciences) programs and participated in Faculty Council and Program meetings.  I taught courses (HLSC2461, BIOL3020) for faculty who were on sabbatical or had obtained course releases.  In June 201, I graduated with a Master of Education.

In 2012, I successfully applied for a full time Lecturer position.   Since then, I have continued teaching as 80% of the workload, with the addition of an overload course in the 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 academic years.  My areas of service during the time include being Co-chair of the Undergraduate Program Review (UPR) for the BAHSc, having input in the UPR of the BHSc and the accreditation process for the Bachelor of Science (nursing) at Georgian College, being a voting member of the Award Selection Committee for the Staff Awards of Excellence and the Teaching Faculty Workload Committee, co-organizing Teacher Talk, and being involved in the creation of a document highlighting some gaps for fully online programs at UOIT.  I also supervised three Research Practicuum Students, and have had work presented at international conferences (STHLE 2012, EduLearn 2012, IADIS 2013, EdMedia 2013, IADIS2014, EDC2014). I have continued to participate at Faculty Council meetings, BHSc program meetings, the BAHSc orientation and judge at the Undergraduate Research Poster Day.

I submit this documentation as part of the Continuing Appointment process and hope to have many more years of service and teaching at UOIT.
